Our baby grand daughter Madison celebrated her first Birthday this month and it would be an understatement to say she has her Kiki and GP wrapped around her little finger. We are all consumed with this little person and blown away by the love we have for her; and just when we think our hearts might burst we learn that her little sister is on the way! Jodi is doing great and says this pregnancy is going by much faster than her first. I'm thinking chasing a little toddler around might have something to do with that. We are so very excited!

Lakehouse Outfitters has had a whirlwind few months. With the closing of LHO the end of October I had visions of freedom and fewer demands on my time. That may have happened had we not been in retail and in the middle of Holiday Season, the three biggest months of the year in Canton.

We came out of the blocks in November with a huge Canton and worked the rest of the month prepping for December. Canton is becoming a full time retail operation (although we only open 4 days each month) and earlier this month we were offered additional square footage in our building and are in the process of expanding and remodeling our store there. Whew! Never a dull moment.

If you haven't been to Canton to shop recently this is a good month to do so as we're celebrating our new space with a Remodeling Sale!

We also saw a big jump in sales over the Holidays from people shopping ONLINE

which was another learning curve and one we continue to improve and tweak to be sure we are meeting expectations from those shopping online. Our online customers are mostly from Texas although the past few weeks we have seen an increase of visitors from New York, Illinois, Georgia, Michigan which is encouraging.

And finally, we have upgraded our Lakehouse Outfitters facebook page to allow our friends and followers to shop new products at a discount before they are brought into inventory. We have so many wonderful customers we wanted to do something special for them and facebook seemed like the perfect place.

A visit to the

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery just west of downtown San Diego took my breathe away and reminded me that the Freedom we so enjoy as Americans is many things, but Free is not one of them.

There are 101, 079 graves at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery dating back to 1882.

It sounds cliche' to say that pictures speak louder than words - yet in this situation this blogger's words seem small and feel like unwanted company to this post.

Dreary, Damp, Drizzling & Delightful!

As we went about our business Monday morning I was taken aback while listening to local radio by the dismal attitudes regarding the rain. (Last I knew, we were in the midst of the worst drought in the history of the State of Texas)

"It's a dismal, rainy sloppy morning out there."
"We're in for a nasty rainy day or two."
"This weather front is going to be with us for a few days, more wet, gray, gloom ahead"

At the risk of sounding like a contrarian I have to say I'm loving the rain and the replenishing of our water levels. As you know, there are 100's of lake homes and recreational property lining the shores of the many reservoirs which supply the water to the Dallas/Fort Worth municipalities. I found a few photos to remind us how much of this rainy, sloppy, gloomy, gray, wet and nasty rain days we need to get back into normal water supply levels.

It was reported that DFW Airport received 2" of rain yesterday. In looking at these photos it's easy to imagine 2" simply disappearing into the ground. Some lakes are down 22-24 feet!

I say, let it rain, let it rain, let it rain!

A Pit Stop worth making...at least once!

If you happen to be headed to the lake or the parents' house for a week of much needed R and R you might consider making a pit stop at Spec's on your way out of Big D or Austin, Beaumont, College Station, Corpus, El Paso, Houston, Kerrville, San Antonio, Victoria or Waco (Spec's Locations).

We happened along Spec's new store in Dallas this week as a result of a casual mention to our family that we were headed to the liquor store. Our casual mention was followed by a persuasive pitch to check out Spec's. So off we go for the sake of research.

The location is on the SE corner of Walnut Hill and 75 N Central Expressway in a building that has been vacant for some years, I'm thinking it may have been the old Toys R Us store, next to the former AMC Theatre that is now also closed. Our initial thought: Weird location.

And actually, weird doesn't seem like the best word to describe the store or our experience so we won't use it. But the store is different. We took a little tour and captured some highlights of our visit. All under the heading of. . .

With the most colorful cutting boards ever. In this section of the store you'll find glassware, tools, appliances, gifts, cards, wrap, novelties and a bunch of stuff we can't even remember.

In the end, reporting back to the family on our impressions we sum it up this way:

It's time to start my Christmas Shopping. As of this post there are 10 days, 21 hours and 12 minutes remaining.

I always ask those on my "list" to provide me with a wish list. I'm a big fan of the wish list especially when it's long. My favorite lists are those that include WANT and NEED items and range in price from tiny to ridiculous.

In talking with my daughter Jodi about these lists I started thinking about what my list might look like if the criteria was want and the budget ridiculous. So here it goes.

Dear Santa. . .

This year I really want a Lake House. It's all that's on my list. My sweet, loving, adorable husband dreams of living on the lake and the perfect gift for me would be to give this gift to him.

I've found a place that reminds us of Idaho, yet it is located in Texas and only about 2-hours from Dallas. I admit, I've only seen it advertised online; I have not checked it out in person but I'm confident he would like it.

Sweet Home Alabama

I am fortunate to be married to a talented man who loves photography and water. Ray was born under the Pisces sign a.k.a. the WATER SIGN and it couldn't be more fitting for this man be it the pool, the ocean, the river or the lake - he'll take it! He dreams of living on the water one day.

We have both been fortunate to have been introduced to some wonderful places thanks to the jobs we've held. Alabama is one of those special places; which I have to admit up until my first visit in 2006 I hadn't really given Alabama much thought at all. And now it's one of our favorite places to get away and allow the crashing of the waves to wash all of the daily details away. We recently revisited several of our favorite spots in Alabama and Ray was busy the entire trip capturing some of what has "captured us" relative to this area,

Background: July 30th, 2011. We were working our store in Canton during the (August) First Monday Trade Days. It was Saturday, late morning or possibly close to noon and we were dripping with sweat as the temperature that day was pushing 110 degrees with humidity off the chart. This is when we met Shannon and Matt who had traveled from St. Louis to Canton because of the article in the June issue of Southern Living.

Shannon and her husband Matt are the quintessential customer. Their family and their story is exactly the reason Lakehouse Outfitters exists. It’s a story we couldn’t help but share; written from Shannon’s perspective.

Our Home is in Town & Country, Missouri (a St. Louis Suburb)
Our Lake House is located in Tannenbaum Resort on Greers Ferry Lake, Arkansas

Why Greers Ferry? Matt, my husband, has been coming to Greer's Ferry Lake since he was a toddler.   When we moved back to Little Rock in 1996, Greers Ferry Lake is one of the first places he brought me and I fell in love with its natural beauty, protected shoreline and crystal clear water.

We are very fortunate to have found Camp Torbett, our current lake house. It has exposed wood ceilings, pine floors, a vintage fireplace out of a house in New Orleans and a fantastic boy's bunk room. Most importantly it is a spacious yet cozy, charming and delightful place to unwind and recharge! It's not only a place for our family, but a place to connect with the families and friends that we've made along the way during our life together!

We love having a lake house because we live hectic lives and the lake house requires us to: sit back; reflect; be silly; eat too much; sleep too much; play too much; and laugh too much and appreciate as much!

Little Known Fact About Greers Ferry Lake:    This year was the 25th World Championship Cardboard Boat Races in Heber Springs, AR (on the lake at Sandy Beach). Usually held in July, children and adults spend weeks building and then racing their fine boating creations. It's so much fun to sit on the water on your boat or at Sandy Beach and see all of the outstanding boat designs!

What brought me to Canton/biggest take aways/pleasantly surprised: My best friend of 20 years, a sixth generation Texan, has been talking about Canton for years. It didn't sound all that appealing until my husband and I saw the June 2011 article in Southern Living and we decided to plan a trip during the hottest time of the year August to come visit! Lakehouse Outfitters was at the top of the list and my friend made me wait nearly 3 hours to get there, because she wanted to provide me with a methodical introduction to Canton!  I'm so glad she did because my husband and I were BLOWN away by the variety and breadth of items available in Canton. It was overwhelming trying to process everything we saw, determine what we needed and come to grips with all the things we wanted.  We were also so impressed with vendor attitudes and willingness to help.

Did we make any unexpected purchases at Canton?  We bought a cedar cooler bar for our lake house and we were hoping to find a new mirror and ended up buying a pair of vintage windows that I replaced the glass with mirrors and they are one of my favorite finds ever! We are returning again in October as a side trip for the Arkansas and Texas A&M game at Cowboys Stadium. My husband, who is channeling his inner Verne Yip (HGTV) already has already begun to compile a list of things we need to get for our city home and lake home as well as unique gifts that we can give to family and friends this holiday season.

I think the highlight for me was meeting Cindy and getting to order our Greers Ferry Lake map for our lake house and the guestbook. There's something very satisfying when a visit exceeds your expectations and that's what our interactions with Lake House Outfitters was. When our map arrived, we were like kids at Christmas and we've placed over our bench of beach towels which is by the door exiting the house out to the lake. The map hasn't been up very long, but EVERYONE has commented that they love the map and how it totally suits the feel of our house. And our visitors have loved the guestbook and we know it will become a memory keeper of all the wonderful weekends that we will have with friends and family in the years to come!

The conversation went something like this:

Them: You are LakeHouse Outfitters, yet you don't have any mounted fish. We keep coming in looking for a nice fish to mount in our game room. How can you call yourselves Lakehouse Outfitters and not have any fish??

Us: You are right! We keep searching and coming up empty handed. Not because we don't find them but because they are priced too high for us to buy them and resell them. But, I tell you what, next time we see some we will let you know.

So this is us letting you know!

Remotely interested

I'm starting to hear the rumblings.
The rumblings of football season. Pre-season smack and college match ups are in the air.
I'm not really interested at this point.
Seems early.
Seems as though we haven't really had enough time to savor the Mavs Championship season.

Yes, I like football. But at this point, I'm just remotely interested.

As in, interested in managing and hiding all those hideous remotes as every television in the house gets tuned up and turned up for the next 7 months.

Here's how it rolls in our house.

And the next words I hear: Do you know where the remote is?

So yes, I'm on a mission to manage the remotes this season. I've been looking for answers. I've been looking for inspiration. And I found it.

The answer to my remote challenge was right in front of me on Morgan's profile page. She says in her profile: On my coffee table I always have a FUN BOX for REMOTES.

Along the way we found this cute little record cabinet. The record player and the tubes are still in tact so I assume someone could get it functioning again. But we thought it would make a darling side table or BAR. The top doors slide to hide the mechanics. Remove the mechanics and you'd have a sweet little liquor cabinet. After visiting sale after sale and being very disappointed in the offerings we decided to head to Grand Prairie to visit one of our Importer friends. He had just rec'd a truck filled with (what we're calling) the Cantina Collection; fun, vintage, colorful BAR furnishings that you just don't see everywhere.

This Moving Sale business is fun! We should have decided to move months ago. Now I "get" the retailers who seem to have the NEVER ENDING moving sale. It works, it drives business and truthfully it kinda makes you wish you weren't moving.

But we are moving. And at this rate it may be sooner than later.

The sale is going so well, we're starting to look like we've already moved! Not to fear, we can't STAND the look of a picked over space especially since we've got so much time left to source wonderful finds and make sure we don't disappoint customers who take the time to shop L.H.O.

Yesterday, I googled LHO just for fun, and found a new flattering review on Yelp! This really got me to thinking about that old saying, you only have one chance to make a first impression. So as long as our doors are open at 2100 Irving Blvd - we will work hard to insure it's a good one. Just as it (apparently) was for Missy the Mouth.

Green Acres Glory!

Whew! Is it just me or is it HOT?

And this blog makes me think the heat is making me a little silly. But I can't help it, these pieces are so cute! Yesterday we ran over the the Dallas World Trade Center to pick up 50 samples from the IMAX showroom as they scurry to prepare for the Dallas Home and Gift Market which begins next week, June 23rd.

As always, the IMAX samples are trendy, offer good values and range from novel to traditional. This pull was no different. We brought back beautiful glass canisters, candle sticks, bowls, vases, picture frames and console tables and wall decor. But what really tickled my fancy were the items featured below.

They make me smile!

They are whimsy, charming, summer appropriate and make me want to run to the sofa, turn on the TV and surf to find and watch at least 10 episodes of Green Acres!

Among the 50 pieces, my Favorites are:

The Garden Sage

Sedum. Succulents. Hens - n - Chicks. Whatever you call them. I love them.

They are the sweetest (mostly) little plants that literally can and will grow in almost any sunny, sandy location without demanding much from the gardener! They are the perfect landscape partner if you're looking for unconditional love.

Succulents are water retaining plants that store much of their water in their leaves, stems, and roots so they can survive and thrive where others may just fade away. Some consider them an old fashioned plant - as grandma surely had succulents growing in her rock garden, a rock wall or along a path.

This past weekend in Canton, I visited with the Mother of All Things Sedum and Succulent, Kim Strickland owner of The Garden Sage.

Kim is a transplant from Alabama, lives in East Texas with her hubs and two teenage boys and loves to get her hands dirty. They started their nursery in 2007 to share their love of Succulents. Kim is warm and charming and passionate about her products...it was difficult to break away from her succulent space and get back to work at Lakehouse Outfitters!

Her prices are great and the plant health was amazing - nothing root bound!!

D Magazine Voting Starts Today!

This photo of Jodi and I was taken in January 14, 2010 just three weeks after we opened the doors to LHO Design & Consign. We needed photos for press releases and marketing materials and after a failed attempt to take them ourselves we resorted to calling in professionals. One of the best decisions to date!

Our (professional) photo was published along with a wonderful article (Hideaway Chic) that appeared in the Guide section of the Dallas Morning News on Saturday, February 6th, 2010. This article put LHO on the map. I cannot begin to tell you how many customers - probably many of you reading this blog found us because of this article. This article is the gift that just keeps on giving, we continue to have new customers visit LHO because of that article. Just this past week, we had a family from Frisco in the store for the first time, they had read and saved the article for over a year!

And now, just 14 months later we are receiving another gift. This time from the editors at D Magazine. We received notice on Friday that LHO Design & Consign had been chosen by the editors of D Magazine as a finalist for the Best of Big D Readers Choice Poll!

In today's mail we received a packet from D Magazine. As you read that sentence you might be thinking, yeah, big deal. And you'd be correct. This is a big deal, very big.

It's hard to describe the feelings associated with this packet. It really took me back to high school to that day in 1974 when the coolest, most handsome and most popular boy in school actually called me by name. I didn't even think he knew I existed. It gave me goosebumps.

Today, we have been recognized and called by name by D Magazine and for a small business like ours, this is big stuff. Definitely goosebump worthy.

What's New Wednesday? Big girl pants

Just as Carole was blazing new trails of fashion and independence as she donned Khakis in the 1950's we've decided to blaze a few new trails of our own. Yep, we're putting on our big girl pants and considering another store. (gulp)

For those of you who follow this blog and know us, you know this venture started out with the intention of serving the lake house customers of North Texas. So many lakes...so little targeted retail. Canton has been our marketing horse, our merchandise test market and our research center as we talk to hundreds of shoppers from around the region about lake living. They all have one thing in common - a big smile on their face!

So it's now or never for Lakehouse Outfitters to put on their big girl pants and open a retail store dedicated to our happy customers. The question is: WHERE?

We have spent the past 6 weeks hunting for the perfect location. It has been all consuming. For those of you who know me personally, you know I have tremendous, unwavering focus. Well, as of this morning, my head is spinning and to quote a line from the New Karate Kid "My Focus Needs Focus."

This is so difficult, obviously we are looking for the perfect location to house our wares for you to shop.
Here are a few of the options we like. And as you see by the Poll we've posted, we'd like your feedback. We do not want to make this decision with our heads under water (punn intended) - let us know your thoughts.

In plain speak, here's our criteria:

An area that is attractive as a shopping/dining/entertainment destination
Retail Foot Traffic - we need shoppers walking past our front door

The Harbors - Rockwall - we first considered this as a no brainer. It's a waterfront retail/dining/entertainment venue. Seems like a good place for a store with the name Lakehouse Outfitters. But is it? Lots of opinions out there...chime in if you have one!

Summer Music Series on the lakeside at The Harbors - starts May 5th -

Historic Downtown McKinney - known for quant shops and restaurants around the genuine downtown square. The old courthouse in the center of the square is now home to the McKinney Performing Arts Center. Pretty good location as McKinney sits (sort of) in the middle of Lake Country. Five Lakes within 45 miles: Lake Lavon, Lake Ray Hubbard, Lake Lewisville, Lake Ray Roberts and Lake Texoma. A completely different vibe from The Harbors...

This old bank building offers 2400 sq feet of prime retail space, right on the corner of E Virginia and Tennessee Streets
Although, the large columns don't really scream Lakehouse Outfitters. Does this matter?

Other considerations - with far less research:

The Shops At Legacy - a very urban, manufactured (in a good way) North Dallas destination. Lots of restaurants, less shopping than I had imagined.

Knox/Henderson: Obviously a retail mecca - Knox is now most likely out of the running due to lease rates. We loved the former Smith Hawkins space until we learned that leasing 50% of it would cost us $16,500 per month. Probably not a smart move - even with our big girl pants on.

Henderson: There are a few spaces on the Henderson side of this hub, including 1/2 of the Jones Walker Furniture store just across from The Wooden House and Gypsy Wagon. No details...just noticed the sign in the window.

So there it is. We're putting all our cards on the table. HELP! The last thing we want to do is to make our decision and then have one of our customers say...gee, I wish I would have known you were thinking about this I know of a perfect spot for Lakehouse Outfitters!

As with most of my ideas, this one just popped into my head earlier this week. So with a post on facebook and a few encouraging comments, today we host the first Free Online Flea Market!

Bringing buyers and sellers together. Here's the dealio:

Items posted below are items individuals would like to sell. The photos, descriptions, prices and contact information has been provided by the seller. LHO is simply posting the information on our blog as a way of promoting their sale items.

Group 1:

1) Pot Rack - wrought iron pot rack. 23x44" from outside hook to outside hook. Has 6 hooks for pots. Could afford to be painted, but it's nothing that a $3.00 can of black or oil rubbed bronze spray paint couldn't take care of. Asking $55 OBO

2) Decorative Mirror - Large comtemporary decorative mirror, 38" x 43". Blue, tan, cream and black.

3) Vintage Chair - Heart shaped chair, not sure how old - it belonged to my husband's grandmother. It is a small chair, probably best in a bedroom/sitting area. It is low to the ground, think the legs may have been cut off at some time but not sure. It has springs in it, and would need to be recovered. Asking $50 OBO

4) Burgundy sofa bed, cross between microfiber and suede fabric. Very good condition, one small tear behind cushion on the arm. Mattress on sleeper in excellent condition. Asking $250.

Because I happen to be a baby boomer (born between 1946 and 1964 - insert old joke here) when I read or hear those two words: The Graduate I can't help conjuring up memories of one of the greatest movies of the 1960's and possibly Dustin Hoffman's most famous performance as Benjamin Braddock.

For NON-Boomers reading this blog who may not be familiar...here's the tease:

The Graduate, is arguably one of the best pictures to be released from that era. Dustin Hoffman’s breakout role as Benjamin Braddock is still regarded by many to be his signature performance.

Benjamin has recently graduated from college and begins to have an affair with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), who happens to be the wife of his father’s colleague and close friend. In the midst of the illicit affair, Benjamin starts to fall for the Robinson’s daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross). . .

Pretty darn racy.

What's New Wednesday - a gaggle o'ottomans

Location. Location. Location.

Yes, being in the design district certainly adds interest to our inventory and daily activities. The area is well known for being one of the first design decorative centers outside of New York City as a result of Trammel Crow's vision in the 1950's. Design showrooms, typically open to The Trade only are tucked into spaces such as the Decorative Center, the International and the Dallas Design Center.

Also, tucked away in the design district are scores of craftsman, furniture builders and upholstery shops who in "better times" kept their crews busy and their rents paid by serving the showrooms and designers in the area. Keyword: better times.

As of late, we have had many talented craftsmen pull into our parking lot with vans filled with pieces created to supplement their businesses during this slower economy. One such van pulled in a couple of weeks ago with a darling pale blue velvet ottoman that has captured every one's attention and even created a mini smack-down over it on facebook.

This week, more ottomans (a gaggle as Kate affectionately refers to them) a sofa, a wingback and an amazing mirror that would be fabulous in so many places.

This week's What's New is random as you have come to expect - but with a feel good twist. Seems like we're helping others in a new and different way this week. In addition to our constant attempts to provide you with amazing pieces priced at great values (for your hard earned dollars) we are also helping bridge the gap for many talented craftsmen who have found LHO as an outlet for their talents and an inlet for additional income.

Also - by popular demand we have rec'd several new industrial pieces which made interesting wall decor or table toppers!
